I don’t know when I began this, but when my kids were small, I started leaving surprises for special holidays, at their places at the breakfast table. For example, they might wake up to a special Valentine’s treat and card on Valentine’s day. They actually used to wake up really early to see what had been left on the table for them so I had to get everything ready the night before. I still love waking up to their giggles of joy. Isn’t that kind of what moms live for? I made a really cute and simple treat idea for St. Patrick’s day and wanted to share it with you!
I began by collecting two jars with lids, some green washi tape, marshmallows, a large bag of skittles and some gold-wrapped coins. I had some card stock on hand, so I typed the words, You are the rainbow on every cloudy day in a plain text font, and then went back and changed the colors on each word, following ‘ROY G. BIV.’ pattern. (Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet just in case your mind went blank.) I cut them out in a simple rectangle, and snipped the top corners to make a tag shape and punched a hole at the top.
Next, I sorted all the skittles by color. The easiest way to do this, is in a few small dishes like you see here.
After that, I started by layering my gold coins, followed by a handful of marshmallows. (Put more in than you think you need as they need to be kind of smashed down gently so the skittles don’t down fall in between the cracks and ruin your rainbow effect.) Finally, layer all of your skittle colors! I sprinkled them in handful, by handful, until each color was evenly dispersed between the two jars.
I sealed them up and taped on the tag, and now I’m all ready to surprise my little hoodlums on St. Patrick’s Day.
