There are a million homemade face mask recipes on the internet, but not all of them can be made with what’s in your pantry.
Rosehips? I know what roses are. I didn’t know they had hips. Is that kind of like the bee’s knees?
Anyway, I usually find myself standing in front of the pantry and wondering if I can substitute something in place of the tea tree oil. Like maybe peanut butter or apple cider vinegar. Because those are the things that are actually in my pantry.
While I know there are plenty of people who do have exotic items in their pantry I’m also confident I’m not the only one who gets stuck about halfway down the ingredient list.
So here are five super simple homemade beauty masks – at least one of which I’m confident you can make with stuff you already have in your home.
Honey and Olive Oil Mask + Scrub
Mix Together: 1 T Honey, 1 T olive oil, 1 T sugar
Apply to your face. After 10-15 minutes, very gently massage in a circular motion for about 30 seconds and rinse off. The honey and olive oil are moisturizing, but the sugar scrub at the end exfoliates and brightens the skin. Of all the masks, this was my fave. So easy and effective!
Egg White & Yogurt Mask
Mix Together: Egg white, 1.5 T plain yogurt
Apply to your face. Allow to dry for 15 minutes. Wash off. The yogurt does a great job of moisturizing your skin while the egg white tightens it and draws out impurities. This one is about as easy as you can get – 2 ingredients! If the mask is a little runnier (and messier) than you prefer, stir in some oatmeal or honey to stiffen the mask – and give your skin some extra nutrients!
Oatmeal & Milk Moisturizing Mask
Mix Together: 1 T ground Oatmeal, milk (enough to make a paste)
Apply to your face, and let it sit for 15 minutes. This is a great option for dry skin. The milk moisturizes and the oatmeal nourishes your face, while gently exfoliating your skin and giving it a smooth appearance. No drying agents here! If you prefer a thicker mask, use yogurt in place of the milk. Honey is also a good optional addition to this mask.
Coffee & Cocoa Invigorating Mask + Scrub
Mix Together: 1 tsp coffee grounds, 1 tsp cocoa, 1 tsp honey, milk
Apply to your face and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. This was the biggest surprise of the bunch! The coffee and cocoa reduce puffiness and invigorate your skin, and the grounds exfoliate as you apply. The honey is very nourishing and the milk is moisturizing. And it smells good enough to eat! I ended up loving this mask!
Baking Soda Acne Mask
Mix Together: Baking soda, water (to form paste)
Apply to your face and allow to dry. Some people swear by this as an acne solution. Unfortunately, me & acne have had a very close relationship for the past 20+ years. I tried this and, to be honest, don’t plan to do it again. It was way too harsh for my preference. However, I’m sharing it here in case there’s someone desperate to try something new. This mask was incredibly drying to the skin – which is why it’s attractive as an acne solution. However, you’re not really doing yourself any favors by overdrying. If you do decide to give this a go, I highly recommend following it up with a super moisturizing mask of honey and olive oil. Honey has cleansing and antibacterial properties (acne is caused by bacteria!) and don’t be afraid of the olive oil – it will moisturize, not clog, your pores. Better yet, go and give the first mask a try instead!
