There is a new car seat/booster law going into effect in January 2020. Children under two must be rear facing until they reach the height and weight requirements by the seat manufacturer. After that, they can be forward facing in a car seat until they reach specifications for a booster seat.
Children shorter than 4’9 must sit in a booster seat.
As a mom, I understand the reasoning behind which is due to the lap and shoulder belt needing to fit properly.
As the mom of an eight year old, I can vouch that this law is not favored by second graders.
The first thing my son did was insist he was 4’9. So, off to the garage we went where it was confirmed he is only 4’4. Sorry kid, the measuring board doesn’t lie. He doesn’t care that it’s a safety driven law. All he cares about is that he feels nerdy having to be in a booster like his five year old sister.
The big question in our house is how long it will take for him to reach 4’9. Sorry again kid, unfortunately that could be awhile. Hopefully we won’t be pulling up to middle school with him in a booster but you know there will be some who have this in their future.
I thought it would be fun to capture his reaction the day he found out he is not 4’9 and, therefore, will be back into a booster seat immediately. I am leaving out the detail that technically it doesn’t go into effect until January. His sister’s reaction only makes him more upset. I know she does it on purpose.
Do you have little ones who are less than thrilled with this law?
