Have you heard? Scrunchies are back in style!
How in the world did this happen? Wasn’t it just yesterday that people of all ages were wearing them in their hair to match the 1980’s and 90’s fashions?
Those fashions seem a little over-the-top now, don’t they? My kids look at pictures from that era in the photo album and whine, “How could you let us leave the house looking like that?!”
Well, scrunchies were part of that crazy time and I loved them. I had one in every color and for every holiday. No outfit was quite complete without a scrunchie in my hair. In fact, I wore them until my daughter finally said, “Stop with the scrunchies, mom, they’re dorky and out of style.”
So, I stopped wearing them and eventually even got to the point where I realized that they belonged to another era, the one with the plastic shoes and shiny neon disco pants.
So, I was shocked when my daughter came over the other day with a scrunchie holding her hair up. Had she lost her mind? She does have a crazy amount of thick hair and I figured maybe she had grown tired of ripping her hair out with rubber bands. Perhaps, in a moment of frustration, she found an old scrunchie in her drawer and put it on?
But, no. As usual, she was just way ahead of me in terms of fashion.
Because, scrunchies are indeed back.
Fashion houses reintroduced them on the runway. The fall 2019 Armani Prive’ show even had models in “forehead scrunchies” (as if scrunchies couldn’t be more controversial already).
Not to be left behind, celebrities are posting pictures of themselves in scrunchies on social media. Even Jason Momoa has been snapped with some in his hair or on his wrist.
I have to ask, “Isn’t it too soon for them to be vintage chic?” I mean, it really does seem like yesterday that I was begrudgingly giving mine away.
But, I started seeing all kinds of women wearing them again. I was following three teens down the sidewalk the other day and they all had scrunchies in their hair. The trend is back.
I have some mixed emotions about that. I can’t quite get over the fact that it was almost yesterday when they were considered a big fashion faux pas. Yet, they were so comfortable and they added a little zing to otherwise boring ponytails.
What about you? Are you ready to embrace those little circles of fabric once again (or, maybe for the first time)? Share pictures!
