One thing I love about Fall weather is pulling out all my sweaters I haven’t seen in months and getting my closet ready for the cooler weather. I’m sad to say goodbye to my tank tops and sundresses but I really don’t mind the coziness that Fall brings. One thing I absolutely hate is looking down and seeing those balls of fuzz hanging on me. Or looking in the mirror and realizing my pants are now covered in my sweater material.
Here are eight tips to avoid those embarrassing moments of wearing a head to toe sweater:
- Buy a sweater shaver. The downside to this is that allegedly it can, after time, ruin clothes. However, I have used one for years and honestly have never noticed any damage. It very gently removes fuzz, lint and pilling from clothing. This is by far my # 1 tip to use.
- Wash clothes inside out. Clothing rubs against other articles of clothing causing it to pill more. Washing them inside out means the fabric won’t be abraded as much. However, I learned that this then means pills will show up on the backside which is why the camisoles I wear under are often covered.
- Use a garment bag. To avoid pilling on the inside when washing inside out, try placing the sweater into a large garment bag to avoid quite as much friction with other clothing.
- Wash clothes separately. I feel like this is a waste of resources like water but I have used the “extra small load” cycle on my washer before to avoid my pilling prone clothes from rubbing against other clothing.
- Use a laundry detergent with enzymes. The enzymes will eat away at the fabric just slightly to remove some of the short fibers that tend to pill. Note, some are not recommended for wool (which usually is dry cleaner recommended) so be cautious.
- Hand wash clothing. Some washing machines have a hand wash setting to ensure extra gentle care of the clothing.
- Use scissors. Being oh so careful, you can remove the balls one pill at a time with scissors. I have used this tip when in a pinch but I find the fabric shaver to be easier, safer and quicker.
- Use a Lint Roller. This will not give you any permanent fix but it will ensure you can quickly get that fuzz off and not be a walking sweater all day. You’ll have to repeat throughout the day. I keep one at my desk and also use it on my office chair when I notice I have pilled a bit on it. The things we do for fashion.
