Christmas songs are one of those subjects that tend to divide people. Some of us would be willing to listen to Christmas music all year long and then there are others who cringe whenever a peppy Christmas song is played.
You can probably guess which camp I’m in. I love Christmas music and I love singing along (loudly). It makes me happy when radio stations play carols early and I’m always sad when they stop for the season.
So, I asked people what their favorite Christmas songs are. Look them up on YouTube and see if you agree with this very eclectic list!
- I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas, sung by Sherry Stahl. I can’t listen to this without smiling and singing along.
- Breath of Heaven, sung by Amy Grant. This one gets me every time!
- Mary, Did You Know? Any version really. The lyrics are pure magic.
- Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Carol of the Bells. This one has to be played at full volume!
- Holly Jolly Christmas, sung by Burl Ives. Come on, it’s Burl! Plus, it’s from the classic Rudolph cartoon: win/win.
- The Christmas Song, sung by Nat King Cole. His voice is so pure.
- The Little Drummer Boy, sung by Bing Crosby and David Bowie. Perhaps the weirdest choice for a duet ever, but it works!
- Sleigh Ride, sung by Johnny Mathis. Johnny has the most recognizable voice ever and it’s perfect for singing Christmas songs.
- Merry Christmas, Darling, sung by Karen Carpenter. We lost her gorgeous alto voice way too early.
- Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, sung by Judy Garland. First sung in the movie: “Meet Me in St. Louis” (my favorite movie).
- White Christmas, sung by Bing Crosby. A classic.
- Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, sung by The Celtic Woman. A lovely version.
- All I want For Christmas is You, sung by Mariah Carey. Her voice is magical.
- Little Saint Nick, sung by the Beach Boys. Pure fun!
- Stop the Cavalry, sung by the Cory Band. So different and catchy.
- Be Born in Me, sung by Francesca Battistelli. So reflective and deep.
And, lastly, my daughter said that her favorite Christmas song is “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” so she’s definitely out of the will.
