We’re all looking for ways to enjoy some family fun during these quarantine days. This past weekend, my family had a lot of fun and laughs in the kitchen with a coronavirus-themed baking competition! We got the idea one evening while gathered around the TV watching our favorite lighthearted Netflix show, Nailed It! If you’re not familiar with the show, a group of novice bakers are tasked with recreating incredibly intricate cakes and cookies under an impossibly short timeline. Hilarity ensues, and the final products are a pathetic but gut-busting representation of the original culinary artwork.
With a rain-filled PNW weekend ahead of us, we decided to do our own version of a baking competition. Instead of recreating an existing cake we decided to divide into teams and each design a custom cake, and we posted the results on social media for the final votes. We opted for boxed cake mix instead of scratch (since baking supplies are in short supply right now), set a strict 2-hour time limit per team, and took turns in the kitchen. I also placed a curbside pick-up order from Michael’s for some fancy decorating supplies to make sure we had everything we needed.
It was so fun! I encourage you to get creative in the kitchen with your family. You could even do a competition against other families in your LifeGroup, family group, or circle of friends to make it more of a social event! Set some guidelines, choose a theme, buy some supplies, and get baking.
And don’t forget to show us what you come up with! We can’t wait to see what fun you and your family have in the kitchen!
When all was said and done, here’s what we came up with in our family within the 2-hour time limit. The guys made a toilet-paper themed cake complete with hand sanitizer and sterile gloves, while the girls did a COVID-19 virus model. And then we had cake for dinner. Because since we can’t have anyone over to enjoy it with us, we might as well eat it before it goes bad. Right?!?
