As I watched my grandson stare in awe at the yellow water coming out of his body (he’s potty-training) I wanted to laugh. But, as I thought more about it I realized that eliminating yellow water out of one’s body really is worthy of a bit of awe.
I know that’s a really weird example, but it triggered my thinking and I wondered what other wonders I have been ignoring.
The beauty of raising young children is that you get to see the world through their eyes when everything is still fresh and new. Without the stress of the long “to-do” lists that adults have, kids have the luxury to really take in all the wonders that God created; the smell of a rose (how does that fragrance get in there?), a flying ladybug or a dandelion that dissolves into a hundred tiny “helicopters” when you blow on it.
I suppose that after doing or seeing something for years and years, it’s bound to become a bit mundane and we forget how miraculous everything seemed at one time. That’s why I feel so blessed to have little ones in my life to remind me of how truly awesome God’s creations are.
During this crazy, rather negative time we live in, it is easy to fall into crabbiness (and, I often do). What if instead I chose to refocus on the wonder I felt as a child? After all, huge sunflowers grow eight feet tall from the tiny seeds I planted in my garden and the sun turned a beautiful shade of pink during the sunset last night.
We choose what we focus on (we tend to forget that too!). It took my grandson’s fascination with pee to remind me of the wonders that surround me.
