Who doesn’t love a cute, festive snack? Today we’re teaching you how to make this popular appetizer just in time for the holiday! This recipe includes a tutorial on how to make the crescent roll dough yourself. Bacon Jalapeno Mummies
For the dough:
- 2 pkg. active dry yeast
- ¾ c. milk
- ½ c. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 eggs
- ½ c. butter (softened)
- 4 c. flour
For the filling:
- 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
- 1 c. shredded pepper jack cheese
- 6 slices Fletcher’s bacon, cooked & chopped
- 1 tsp. Garlic powder
- 1 tsp. Onion powder
- ¼ tsp. Cayenne pepper
You’ll also need:
- 10 jalapenos, halved lengthwise and seeded
- candy eyes (typically available in the cake decorating section of your grocery store or at your local craft store)
Instructions:
- Heat milk and sugar in the microwave using a microwave-safe bowl or glass measuring cup. The temperature should be warm, but not hot. Anything above 120 degrees will kill your yeast.
- Pour warm milk and sugar mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer; sprinkle yeast on top and allow to sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add 1 cup of flour and beat on medium for 3 minutes. Add salt, eggs, and butter. Mix well.
- Mix in flour a little at a time until you have a smooth dough. If the dough becomes thick before using up all the flour, don’t be afraid to leave out the remaining flour.
- Use your stand mixer’s dough hook or knead by hand for 10 minutes until soft. Cover the bowl and set it in a warm place to rise until doubled (about an hour).
- Meanwhile, mix the filling. Combine cream cheese, pepper jack, bacon, and spices until well mixed. Spoon into jalapeno halves.
- When your dough is done rising, punch it down. Turn it on a floured surface, sprinkle it with more flour, and roll it out to ⅛ – ¼ inch thick. Slice into ¼ – ½ inch strips.
- Wrap strips around your stuffed jalapenos to resemble mummies, leaving space for the eyes. Allow to rest for 15 minutes while preheating your oven to 400 degrees.
- Place on a baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 12-14 minutes or until golden. Insert eyes after baking.
