Want to do a fun Christmas craft with your kids, or make a super easy but memorable gift? Clay ornaments are simple, easy, and the creative possibilities are endless!
What Type of Clay Should I Use for Clay Ornaments?
There are many types of clay, but for these ornaments I recommend using polymer clay. It comes in a huge array of colors at your local craft store, and packages run about $1 or less. For bigger projects you can buy larger volumes. Polymer clay is easily pliable until baked.
How Do I Bake Polymer Clay?
Generally, you’ll want to bake your polymer clay at 275 degrees for 15 minutes (though longer baking times are needed for thicker projects). Polymer clay will still feel a little soft when it comes out of the oven, but will harden as it cools. Avoid overbaking as your final creation will become brittle.
How Can I Decorate Polymer Clay Ornaments?
Polymer clay ornaments are super simple to make but can be easily elevated. Here are some ideas.
Use different shapes: Use cookie cutters to make ornaments of different shapes and sizes.
Add some bling: In addition to creating a hole for the hanger, create a holes prior to baking for additional elements. Cute Christmas decor is super inexpensive and adds instant charm.
Mix up the hangers: Twine adds rustic charm. Red-and-white strands add festive flair. A little bell or two transforms a simple ornament. A few beads boosts the elegance.
Main decor: So many options here! Acrylic paint, stencils, stamping kits, thumbprint hearts, puppy paw prints…so many options! I made some “Merry Christmas” ones and also some for our neighbors with the name of our neighborhood. Paint should be done after baking. Impressions should be made before baking.
Cute twists: These are so, so easy! Twist three cords of clay, cut into shorter sections, form into candy canes, and insert a hook into the top (I used staples from my husband’s staple gun), and bake. After, use a sharpie to add the year, name, or a seasonal message.
