“Feed the birds, tuppence a bag!”
I have no idea what a tuppence is, but I can get behind feeding the birds.
In this rather barren and rainy season of winter, my heart aches for reminders of life. Making these suet birdseed cakes is the perfect solution.
Suet Bird Feeders
- 1/3 cup of bacon grease or shortening (room temp, not hot)
- ½ cup peanut butter (no added sugar)
- 2 cups of outdoor birdseed
Stir the ingredients together and chill for 30 minutes. Press into cookie cutters (sprayed with cooking spray) and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Push a piece of a drinking straw in for a hanging hole. Chill overnight or until set. Thread some twine through the holes and hang outside.
Additional ideas:
Mold the suet into a snowman shape with twigs for arms. Let the kids decorate it with cranberries or raisins.
Push your suet into a suet holder and hang for the birds.
Use a sprayed muffin tin to make suet cakes
Cut any leftover pumpkins you may have in half, scoop out the seeds and push your suet cakes inside or simply fill it with birdseed.
Do the same thing with an orange.
Cut an apple in half, spread peanut butter on the cut sides and dip in birdseed.
Suet cakes and birdfeeders are perfect for these gray days. They’ll not only make you happy, but the birds will be thrilled!
