We are in a season of reflection and goal setting. During the holidays, I saw so many well-meaning articles. The titles vary but the gist is the same: “Don’t get so caught up in the madness of the season that you forget what really matters…”
Do I agree with the sentiment? Absolutely. Have I figured out how to actually do it? Not really.
For example, I ran into the mall today to pick up a candle I like from a store that was (unbeknownst to me) having a HUGE SALE. Let me translate: I ended up in the very polite Southern version of a catfight over a $3 body lotion. I won, only to discover later that it had glitter in it. Serves me right.
So what I’ve realized is this: there are places (and dare I say people?) that I have to avoid when the crazy comes.
Amazon has become my unofficial best friend and I don’t open flyers advertising specials because inevitably it leads me to go buy things I had no intention of purchasing because IT’S SUCH A GOOD DEAL.
I want to embrace simplicity this year and be intentional with my time and my money. So this year, I’m making a vow to stay at home more and shut down the voice that says one more purchase, one more thing would make everything perfect.
How do you stay away from the things that bring you to the end of yourself?
For me, it’s deciding that if I want to go back to the mall, I will slather glitter lotion all over myself and reconsider the consequences
