My friend, Kay, sent me a story about a graduating class who received an unexpected gift with their diplomas. Each student received a handwritten note from their teachers. You won’t be surprised to learn that the young people valued those letters more than their engraved diplomas.
Moments of human connection (like a handwritten note) are the most precious moments of life, beating out even personal achievements.
The times we are thanked for our service, or find out how appreciated we are, or told how much we’re loved, mean the world. So, why do we hesitate to do it for those we love? What are the “rules” about showing love and do we really have to follow them?
Think about it; graduations, weddings, births and birthdays are standard times to gather and tell people how much they mean to us. But, what about the average, everyday times when a positive word would mean so much?
We tell beautiful stories about loved ones at their funerals when they’re not there to hear them. We wait for the right moment to tell someone we love them and we are hesitant to tell someone how lovely they look. Why?
What if we changed things up and celebrated the people in our lives during the dull, dreary, boring days?
I’ve been on the receiving end of “unexpected love moments” and I remember each one. The fact that they happened out of the blue made them even more special. We expect special occasions to be well, … special. But, to have a normal day blessed by someone’s kind words is magical indeed.
So, let’s not wait for celebrations anymore. Let’s send those notes, give those hugs and spread the love every day.
I’ll start.
I’m so very glad you’re here. God made you uniquely you and there is no one else like you. You are here for a reason and you are so loved.
