Hebrews 10:25 – And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
Community is such an important part of our faith walk. Do you have a community to surround you? You know this week I’ve been talking a lot about the fact that things may not look exactly like you think they should. Community is no different. I know there are restrictions in your life right now that may make going to church difficult or gathering with that small group, but that does not mean it is impossible.
Right before COVID hit, my small group at church had disbanded because so many were moving away. Once COVID hit, my husband and I didn’t join a new group and then church was closed and went online. Since we are both working here in ministry, we’ve been surrounded by the incredible people that we work with. I felt the void of just having someone praying with me so I reached out to one of my coworkers to see if she would be my prayer buddy. I was so nervous. Ha! We work together every day and yet my palms were sweating when I texted her to ask.
It’s like being in school again. The nervous anticipation. Will she say yes?
Spoiler Alert: She said yes.
We touch base regularly and pray together about work and non-work related things. It has been great to have that person.
Find someone in your life that can be that person. It could be a family member, a friend, or a coworker. You don’t have to jump into a big group all at once if that isn’t your immediate comfort zone. However, I encourage you to take the first step toward connecting with someone you know can be there for you.
Here are a few ways I have been praying for community:
- Pray that God would reveal a community to you to plug into. Lord, show me my place. Remember, this might take time. That’s okay. God knows your needs and desires.
- Connect with a local church for both in-person or zoom meetings that gather regularly. This is a great way to get to know people.
- Text one friend to be your prayer buddy and talk with them regularly or meet in person.
God designed us to be better together. It helps our mental health and perspective when we gather together to pray. It fills us up when we build relationships.
I’m praying over you today. I’m asking God to help you develop a network or community in your life that can be a support and encouragement to you!
