I have multiple tubs of decorations for each holiday, but my 4th of July décor was sadly lacking. So, when I saw some rustic flags for sale, I decided to make my own. Here’s how I did it:
RUSTIC FLAGS
Materials:
- Beige fabric
- Red fabric
- Blue fabric with a star print
- Thread or embroidery floss
- Needle, scissors
- Sticks cut from your yard
- Optional: Hot glue gun
Instructions:
1. Cut or tear the beige fabric into 4 x 6” pieces (tearing gives you a nice, frayed edge). You’ll need one piece for every flag you make.
2. Cut or tear the blue fabric into 2” x 3” pieces. (Again, one piece per flag).
3. Tear strips out of red fabric approximately ½” wide. You’ll need five 6” pieces for each flag.
4. Place a red strip on the top and bottom of your flag and pin.
5. Evenly space the other red stripes to fill the flag and pin.
Sew them on with a simple running stitch. You can match the color of your thread, or use ecru thread for all your stitching (it gives it a more rustic look). I used 2 strands of embroidery floss for all my stitching.
Place your blue fabric on the top left corner of your flag and stitch.
Clip any loose threads.
So easy!
It’s easy to attach your flags to sticks with a hot glue gun or sew a stitch on the top and bottom of your flag and tie the strings onto your branches.
Put your flags in vases.
Or, cut one big bough and attach your flags to each branch. Sew your flags to a length of twine and make a garland or add flags to bouquets of flowers.
Make a few flags with the blue section on the top right if you want to have flags facing both ways.
This was a fun project to do. And, because the flags are supposed to be a little wonky, let the kids help!
