I love the anticipation that the season of Christmas brings. It’s easy to get lost in the anticipation around what will be unwrapped under the tree on Christmas morning. One way to re-focus the reason for the season can be by celebrating and talking about the season of advent. We have some really great resources and ideas on advent devotionals through All Mom Does. It can be fun talking as a family about how we are preparing our hearts for the celebration of the birth of Jesus.
A great daily reminder can be with an advent calendar. The challenge is to ensure our kids know that while fun goodies are often a part of the calendar, the focus should be set on a reminder of what we are really counting down towards. No, the answer is not just more presents. A quick dialogue each morning or night as you and your family open the calendar can become really meaningful throughout this wonderful season.
Here is a list of some fun advent calendars for the season. Be sure to get a jump on it and order yours before they sell out.
A Christmas Story Advent Calendar– Can’t go wrong with this Christmas classic which might be particularly fun for those with older kids who have long out grown the “slim, fidget or squishy stage”.
Advent Story Calendar- Why not make it easy with this calendar that has a small story of Christmas each day. You can take turns who gets to read it each night.
Beauty Calendar- This one is a bit spendy but could be great for households with tween/teen daughters (yes, they would have to pick and choose who gets what). Each day has a new Sephora beauty item.
Nativity Calendar- My kids are likely too old for this one but I think it is adorable. Each day has a figure so you can then put together a nativity scene!
Re-fillable Wooden Advent Calendar– This is a great option to avoid buying a new calendar every single year. You can fill it yourself with candy, small toys or anything that fits in the adorable little compartments.
Grocery Store Calendar– Nothing wrong with grabbing a good ol’ chocolate advent calendar at the grocery store. The chocolate is nostalgic to me and while my kids are always hesitant on it, to me it somehow tastes like the season of Christmas from my childhood.
Etsy Calendar- There are dozens on Etsy but I thought this one was so simple and cute and didn’t include any fuss of toys or food. And it’s re-useable!
Custom Re-useable Calendar (also Etsy)– I have one almost identical to this that my Grandma made many years ago. My kids love putting little surprises in it each year.
Tea Calendar- I will never understand how my mom dislikes coffee but this calendar is a great one for the tea lovers out there. (they also have coffee ones!)
24 Days of Fidgets- It drives me crazy that fidgets continue to be such a hit with my kids. But they love them. There are almost too many to choose from including fidgets, squishies and all other tiny toys in-between.
