In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
This poetic description of Jesus Christ was written by one of His closest disciples, John. It takes us back to the beginning of all things and tells us that Jesus, named here ‘the Word,’ is God — a member of the Trinity. He made all things and is the source of life and light for all of us.
Astonishing as it seems, the Creator of all things, including you and me, chose to become one of us in the humblest of forms. There is nothing needier than a newborn baby! Being born in a place where animals lived was anything but glorious. And his parents were poor nobodies.
No matter what you are going through in life, you can believe that Jesus knows how you feel. As a human being, He was sick with the flu, caught a cold, hit his thumb with the hammer in his carpenter shop, and struggled with hormones as an adolescent. He lost his earthly father and had to provide for His mother. He had a few friends, but many people rejected Him, used Him, and betrayed Him. Sure, there were good things that happened in his life, but it all ended badly. At least it seemed to.
But then He conquered death and won our redemption! You and I are the reason He did all of this. That is the most amazing demonstration of love we could ever want or need.
Pause and soak in that love for a moment.
We hope you are having the best Christmas of your life this year. But if you aren’t, you are not alone. Jesus knows how you feel. He was human, remember? He gets it. And He wants to walk with you through it. But more than that … Jesus wants to lift your eyes above the disappointments, the obligations, and the feelings of being overwhelmed, so you can see Him. It’s His birthday we’re celebrating, after all, so doesn’t He get to choose what it’s all about?
QUESTION: Will you let Jesus make this Christmas what He wants it to be for you? Will you give Him room to redeem it and be the light that brightens every shadow and fills every empty space for you?
PRAYER: Lord, help me remember that it’s all about YOU. Help me look up and see You this Christmas. Give me time to sit and be at peace in Your presence. Please fill my heart and mind this year and remind me you’re near and you understand what I’m going through. Amen.
