Let me get straight to it- the Easter Bunny creeps me out. For as long as I can remember, I have not been a fan of the idea of sitting on the lap of some giant rabbit. It’s always confused me. Do I tell this bunny what I want for Christmas? For Easter? What exactly is the point of visiting the Easter Bunny?
As a parent, I never tried to convince my kids that some life size Peter Rabbit comes into our house to leave candy. I have left evidence of the Easter Bunny with giant rabbit footprints or carrots on the front lawn. But I always told them it was just for fun and they knew mom had a hand in all of it.
We focus on Jesus, and the true meaning of Easter in our house. Maybe with a side of some Easter candy and egg hunts.
But I am kind of a hypocrite.
I am totally down with good ol’ Saint Nick. Flying reindeer, Elf on the Shelf the North Pole. My kids are now nine and twelve and know that while the magic of Christmas is real, and the birth of Jesus, Santa is not. But when they were younger, I absolutely told them Santa was the one filling their stockings and eating the cookies. They still humor me by getting a picture with Santa but they know that it is all for show.
In the many years when they did believe in Santa, I always found it funny that they were ok with the idea of sitting on his lap but that they knew darn well the Easter Bunny was creepy. I guess this goes to show how much we as parents influence their little minds into believing what we want them to.
While the true meaning of Easter is important in our house, the reason for the season of Christmas is also incredibly important. I just always have felt like mixing in a bit of Santa and presents is okay and that I balance it well.
I remember a couple of occasions when each of my kids asked if the Easter Bunny was real. I didn’t even blink an eye before going right into telling them that a bunny doesn’t actually come into our house. Mom and dad leave out Easter baskets and hide Easter eggs. I used to always worry it would tip them off about Santa but somehow it never did.
It is a question every parent will likely grapple with at some point. To believe or not to believe? Tune out the judgment and suggestions of others and focus on what works for your family. You know your kids. Don’t let others traditions stray you from what you know is best for your family.
