“But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children’s children.” —Deuteronomy 4:9
As parents, we have the privilege of discipling our children and helping them grow in their relationship with God. And one of the most impactful ways we can do this is by showing them how to worship.
I have a distinct memory of being four years old and resting in the backseat of my mom’s car. We were parked and waiting to pick up my older brother from school, when the song “God Will Make a Way” by Don Moen began to play on the radio. I watched my mom lift her hands in worship right there in the parking lot. With the warmth of the sun wrapped around me through the window, I closed my eyes and began to sing as well.
To this day, I can remember the presence of the Holy Spirit meeting me there, even at the tender age of four. I desperately needed more of Him, and that night I went to bed with my plastic cassette player tucked underneath my comforter, raising my little hands in worship just as my mother had done.
Faith in Action
As a loving parent, you want your children to grow up with a strong sense of faith and a deep connection to their beliefs. The journey of nurturing their spiritual growth is one of the most important calls on your life. It’s crucial for your children to see you worshipping God. It helps them understand that He is worthy of our praise. In Matthew 19:14, Jesus reminds us to “let the little children come” and assures us that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them. As parents, we need to recognize that our kids are Christ followers and worshippers today.
We have a beautiful opportunity before us to ignite our children’s hearts in worship and adoration. Let’s lead our children and inspire them to develop a deep love for Jesus. Without holding anything back, let them see you worship first!
Engaging Your Child in Worship
Remember that worship is an essential part of your child’s spiritual journey. But keep in mind, while you can create the safe space so that their hearts feel open to receiving, the Holy Spirit will do the work and meet them where they are.
Finding tools and songs that touch their hearts can be challenging as we want to ensure that they are engaged and inspired by what they are hearing. For over three decades Integrity Music’s approach to worship and their dedication to nurturing the spiritual growth of their listeners has made it a trusted resource for churches and families looking to engage in worship together.
Shout Praises Kids and their new album “Great Are You Lord” is all about declaring the name of the Lord. Songs on the album put foundational gospel truths to music for kids and adults alike to enjoy and connect with. It’s important for us to remind our kids that all Christ followers—especially children—have a crucial part in the Kingdom of God.
“Great Are You Lord” also has movement-filled music videos made just for kids as well! They will love the energetic songs and will be singing along in no time. Let’s flood heaven with the sounds of our voices alongside our children, worshiping our Savior.
