Mom guilt is something I have felt multiple times, and you have probably experienced some form of it as well. I found myself asking what the Bible has to say, not just about Mom guilt, but about guilt in general.
What I found was liberating and mindset changing. I had accepted it as a right of passage and settled in the notion that Mom guilt was here to stay, but that is far from the truth. As a follower of Jesus Christ, what I found in the Bible on to topic of guilt is that it does not belong to me. Jesus took it all, along with my sin, when He was nailed to the cross, conquered death and rose again in victory.
Hebrews 10:21-22
And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
The blood of Jesus washes away both sin and guilt. Therefore, if anyone believes in Christ Jesus, there is no more condemnation for them, or guilty verdict against them. They have been redeemed! Set free! Delivered!
Another beautiful passage about guilt being removed from us is found in Isaiah 6:6-7
“Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a glowing coal that he had taken from the altar with tongs. He touched my mouth with it and said, “This has touched your lips. Your guilt has been taken away, and your sin has been forgiven.”
The seraphim took a coal from the from the altar of the Most High God and placed it on Isaiah’s lips and said behold your sin has been removed and your guilt has been taken away from you.
Have you have received the gift of Salvation through faith in Jesus Christ? If you have received salvation by faith then you must also receive the removal of guilt from you by faith. When Jesus died and rose again for us, He took our sin upon Him, including the guilt which is as a result of a sinful nature. As long as we are walking daily in step with the Holy Spirit, as long as we are yielding to the leading of Jesus Christ in our lives, as long as we are fashioning our lives and families according to the will of God spelled out in His Bible, as long as we are leaning on the Holy Spirit to help us because Jesus said He would not leave us helpless but would send us a helper to remind us of all the things He has said, and Who will help us to live in righteousness. Therefore, we must have faith because without faith it is impossible to please God. If God has said in His word that our guilt is taken away from us we must have faith and believe God at His word, for it does not return to Him void but accomplishes all He sends His word out to do and it shall prosper in the thing for which God sent it. (Isaiah 55:11) From the Word of God, this is the revelation: that Mom guilt has no place in the life of a Christian and the life of a Mom that has Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Guilt in general is an imposter because we have been made guiltless by the blood of Jesus.
The blood of Jesus washes away all sin and guilt. This means you should be aware that guilt is a trap and a thief of what is rightfully yours, you who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. He paid the price so you would not have to. How can we lay hold of all the blessings God has already poured out on us if our hands are so full of guilt that we have no space to grasp those blessings? I encourage you let go of that guilt, cast it upon the cross and take up God’s blessing. Take up His mercy and unmerited favor, we did not earn it but we receive it by faith in Christ Jesus. So, release that guilt by faith and take hold instead of mercy, peace, joy, hope and confident assurance that God who called you to this mission field, this ministry and gift of motherhood is the same God that will see you through it guilt free because of faith in the finished works of Jesus for all who believe.
Romans 8:1-4 Therefore, [there is] now no condemnation (no adjudging guilty of wrong) for those who are in Christ Jesus, who live [and] walk not after the dictates of the flesh, but after the dictates of the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has freed me from the law of sin and of death. For God has done what the Law could not do, [its power] being weakened by the flesh [[the entire nature of man without the Holy Spirit]. Sending His own Son in the guise of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, [God] condemned sin in the flesh [subdued, overcame, deprived it of its power over all who accept that sacrifice], So that the righteous and just requirement of the Law might be fully met in us who live and move not in the ways of the flesh but in the ways of the Spirit [our lives governed not by the standards and according to the dictates of the flesh, but controlled by the Holy Spirit].
