Fall is in the air, the kids are heading back to school, and that means Grandparents Day is right around the corner! This year it falls on September 10th and you can always plan on it being the first Sunday after Labor Day. Whether you didn’t even know Grandparents Day was a thing or celebrate it with your loved ones every year, there are a lot of special, simple things you can do to show the grandparents in your life how much you care!
Grandparents can have such a meaningful and unique impact on our lives. Their wisdom and love are priceless. I know it can be a crazy time of year to think about anything other than back-to-school supplies and schedules, but even the smallest gesture can make a huge difference to the incredible grandparents in our lives!
Homemade ideas your kids and their grandparents will love:
HAND-PRINT FLOWERPOTS
What you’ll need:
- Terra-cotta pot(any size)
- Acrylic paint
- Artificial plant, succulents, or fall flowers (Mums, Snapdragons, Pansies, or Dahlias to name a few!)
- Potting soil
Directions:
Have your child dip their hand (or finger for finger-print decorations) into the paint on a paper plate. Carefully press onto the pot or have them decorate it however they wish! Allow to dry and then fill pot with your desired plant.
FAMILY TREE CRAFT
What you’ll need:
- Small or Medium sized canvas(found in the art section or online)
- Acrylic paints(green and brown preferably)
- Paint brushes
- Black Sharpie or marker
Directions:
Paint a tree trunk onto the canvas and have your kids dip their hands in green paint. Use their handprints to create the leaves of the tree. Allow to dry, and then with the marker write the words, “Strong Roots make Beautiful Leaves” or “Grandparent’s Help us Grow”
Another version of this would be to use their fingerprints as fall leaves in various colors and stamp them around the tree branches.
*Write them a poem
*Draw them a picture of a memory you have together
*Find a Grandparent’s Day printable questionnaire or quiz
*Send a Grandparent’s Day card
*Make them a meal or some baked goods!
*Ask them to join you for a picnic
*Take a walk at the park together
OTHER FUN IDEAS:
*Personalize a photo mug or cozy fall blanket
*Door-dash a meal to them if you are short on time or don’t live nearby
*Send them a quick video of the kids saying why they love their grandparents, talking about a favorite memory, or even just a “We love you!” if your kids are little.
Whether you see grandparents and great-grandparents often or rarely, whether you live near or far, there are so many ways to show them appreciation and love! I know that life gets busy, but hopefully you and your kids can find a sweet, simple way to celebrate the grandparents in your life! Already have a fun Grandparent’s Day tradition? What do you and your family do to celebrate? We would love to hear!
