“I’m so glad I live in a world
where there are Octobers.”– Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Montgomery
October is one of my favorite months of the year. I find it so refreshing as we turn the page on summer and step into a world of dramatic color. Fields and porches are covered in pumpkins and the leaves glow in the sun. The nights are cozy and the mornings are crisp. There are also so many fun family activities to enjoy this time of year, but I think a trip to the pumpkin patch is one of the best! If you’re looking forward to pumpkins galore, the smell of kettle corn in the air, hayrides, and corn mazes, then The Patch at Knutson Farms in Sumner, Washington is the place to go!

First and foremost, let’s talk about the pumpkins. Knutson Farms has so many varieties to choose from. They have you covered-whether you’re looking for carving pumpkins, beautiful pumpkins to decorate your fall table, unique pumpkins that will stand out on your porch, or even the lumpy and bumpy ones that make you laugh. My family and I make sure to pick out a Thankful Pumpkin at the patch each year. You may have heard about this tradition. It is simple, sweet, and a great way to focus on thankfulness day after day! Last year at Knutson Farms, my son chose this blue-green beauty as our Thankful Pumpkin.
We left it out on the porch until November 1st, and then we brought it inside and put it in a place everyone could see it. Next to the fireplace or in the middle of the table are great spots! The idea is that you and your whole family each choose one (or more!) things every day that you are thankful for until Thanksgiving rolls around, then you write it on the pumpkin with a permanent marker. It’s so fun to see what your kids come up with. I love hearing the difference in perspectives that the older and younger siblings have. We wrote down everything from silly things like donuts and chicken nuggets to important things like Jesus and our family.
As parents, we usually try to talk to our children about thankfulness on Thanksgiving Day, which of course is very important! Over the years though, I’ve concluded that with all the busyness, planning, and sometimes traveling that we experience that day, it can be hard to get a meaningful message across to our kids when it comes time to carve the turkey and gather around the dinner table with family. If you have you little ones at the moment, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about! When we started this Thankful Pumpkin tradition, it got our kids(and us!) in the habit of thinking about our blessings every day and not just the fourth Thursday in November. We still discuss why we celebrate Thanksgiving in our country and how significant it is, but this pumpkin has become a very special addition! Whatever size or variety you choose, it is sure to leave an impression on your kids and create meaningful memories. Picking it out is half the fun, kind of like finding the perfect Christmas tree! This fall, take a stroll through the rows of gorgeous gourds at Knutson Farms and add a Thankful Pumpkin to your wheel barrow!
Knutson’s farm-fun experience is sure to exceed your pumpkin patch expectations! They have the most adorable fall photo ops set up around the farm and so many awesome activities for your kids to enjoy. The cow train ride, hay ride, and corn maze have always been some of our favorites. Knutson even has a tricycle course! Along with so many fun games and activities, they have you covered with lots of food options and a coffee cart. Apple cannons and gem mining are also available! I think one of the coolest things this year is The Farm At Night event. It will be on Saturdays starting on October 7th until 10pm. You can experience a night of unforgettable family fun in the Night Maze and also reserve a firepit where you can sit among the corn stalks and roast S’mores! What could feel more like fall than that?
The Patch at Knutson Farms goes from September 30th to October 29th. Don’t miss it! Follow them on Instagram @knutsonfarmsinc for the latest news or visit knutsonfarms.us!
