“Let my teaching fall like rain
and my words descend like dew,
like showers on new grass,
like abundant rain on tender plants.”
Deuteronomy 32:2
Aren’t those words beautiful? They’re like a lovely poem instead of a prayer. But, Moses knew what he was talking about when he prayed them in the hopes that the Israelites would hear his words and take them into their hearts.
This scripture always puts June in my mind. In June, the plants in my garden start to poke their little heads out of the ground. Without moisture, they would not grow. We are so blessed to live in an area that receives plentiful rain. I have spent so many days in June sitting with my back door open, looking out on my green back yard and listening to the sound of the rain.
In June everything is new and green. The days are the perfect temperature, not too hot and not too cold. I look at the rain differently in June too. Instead of being a bother, every drop feels like a blessing to my garden.
I belong to a gardening group online. There are members from every corner of the world. It is so fascinating to see what other people grow. When success pictures are posted, I celebrate with them, and I mourn with them when they fail.
Every gardener has different challenges and some of them are really tough to overcome.
One lady kept finding vipers in her garden beds (I would be tempted to hide in my house forever). Other gardeners have Biblical-like plagues of creepy creatures. There are so many bugs crawling in their garden beds that there isn’t an inch without a nasty bug. Others have tiny invisible creatures that chew the new shoots to the ground.
I have seen gardens I could never replicate, and I have seen gardens so bad that I would want to quit trying to grow anything forever.
No matter what, gardeners agree, moisture is needed for growth to happen.
Perhaps that’s why Moses so eloquently used rain and dew, to illustrate his point. Like rain, we need God’s teaching in order to grow. We need it to sink deep into our hearts.
Will we face challenges? Yes, of course we will. We may have vipers in our paths, or creepy looking things that surround us, or enemies we can’t even see that do irreversible damage.
But, in June I take joy in the sound of raindrops hitting the ground and making my toil easier. I love to look around me and see that the world is draped in the beautiful light green of new growth.
It’s the perfect time to shower myself with God’s word and pour it into my heart.
Moses used just the right words to talk about how he wanted faith to grow in the Israelites’ hearts. As rain and dew are needed for plant growth, the teachings of God are crucial for our faith to grow.
June seems like the perfect time to put that into action.
