Have you ever looked back on your life and realized you have been trying to achieve a goal for the better portion of your life and have yet to reach that goal? That is how I felt about weight loss. My diet journey began in 4th grade when my pediatric doctor told my mom I was getting chubby and suggested I change from whole milk to skim milk and cut back on the calories.
This was in the mid 70’s when the lifestyle of most adults was becoming more sedentary. The pounds started creeping on and the diet roller coaster took a turn for the worse for our population. Sure, cutting calories had always been suggested and being active was a goal. But never before had the food changed so dramatically in our country, and for the worse when our health is concerned. Cutting calories no longer meant eat less, it meant eating more of low calorie high carb foods.
I was not immune to this change. I was put on multiple diets, weight watchers, pyramid, cabbage soup, even a 500 calorie hospital-supported liquid diet. I tried diet pills, juicing, you name it. Nothing worked long term, and none of these diets got me to my goal weight.
My only saving grace growing up was that I was athletic and extremely active. I was a long-distance swimmer, long-distance bicyclist, and avid down-hill skier. I tried running (not my best sport, but runners look so slim), finished two half marathons and even completed a full marathon, yet did not lose much weight. I was fit and strong – Fit Fat it was the term.
I was called ‘big boned’, ‘curvy’, ‘muscular’, that being heavy was my ‘body type’. I even tried to convince myself the medical weight charts were not realistic. Maybe so but that did not justify being 50-75 pounds away from a healthy weight according to the medical weight charts.
Through life events I stumbled upon Ideal Protein. Of course the first time I tried the program I did what I do with every diet: weigh in heavy clothes the first week and light clothes the second week. Thus I could ‘lose weight’ and not have to diet for the first week. Second week I would kinda follow the plan and lose some weight and then reward myself with a very unhealthy meal because I had 6 days and 23 hours to burn that off.
And so the pattern of all my other diets continued. I was ‘on a diet’ but not losing weight. The coach I had for my first go around with Ideal Protein was simply an employee of the clinic who weighed, measured, and sold Ideal Protein food. There was no education about Ideal Protein, no mention of insulin output, giving the pancreas a rest, metabolizing fat while maintaining lean muscle mass, and certainly gluconeogenesis was never mentioned.
The clinic was looking to hire a new coach, and I was in a crossroads with career opportunities. After negotiations with my now Medical Director we decided I would run the Ideal Protein business on a trial basis. With my education, business, and medical background – and of course my life long diet journey – it was a perfect fit. I immersed myself in the company’s information, attending seminars, meeting with the advising pharmacist of the company, and more importantly following the diet exactly as it was to be followed. The pounds of fat left my body easier and faster than any other diet. I reached my weight loss goal and stayed there.
It has been 5 years since that trial basis. In that time I have run two Ideal Protein clinics, worked as a rep for the company opening clinics and training medical staff to run their Ideal Protein business and provide coaching. (I gave my second clinic to a then dieter in order to work as a rep for the company.) I currently own and run my Ideal Protein office in Edmonds and after having two babies I am back on Ideal Protein to lose the pregnancy weight. I am not an employee selling Ideal Protein food. I have a personally vested interest in my dieters, their weight loss journey, their health and vitality and for a better quality life.
