What kind of a nitwit starts a diet before three of the biggest food holidays?
Because honestly, what are Harvest Parties without pumpkin goodies and candy? And, what is Thanksgiving without turkey, dressing, potatoes and pies? And, everyone knows that the Christmas season is filled with baking (and eating) cookies!
Well, I am that nitwit and it turns out that those holidays can be enjoyed without all the sugar and carbs! Who knew?!! (Certainly not me!).
The annual Pumpkin Party is always at my house, and that made it easy to stay on track. I simply premade a salad for myself and stuck it in the fridge. No one knew (or cared) that I wasn’t eating the other party food. I also made sure that I had an Ideal Protein snack on hand from Edmonds Ideal Weightloss so I didn’t feel deprived. While the others were having their treats, I had hot tea and a yummy chocolate bar. Surprisingly, I felt perfectly satisfied. And, no carb hangover or weight gained!
On Thanksgiving, I was a little more defiant and refused to cook the feast. So, my daughter and son-in-law hosted Thanksgiving this year. It was the first time in over three decades that I wasn’t in charge of cooking the meal and it felt wonderful! There were plenty of approved foods I could eat and instead of being stuffed and carb exhausted, I felt great. I am inspired to change my future Thanksgiving menus from being carb-heavy to being fresh and natural.
Christmas was perhaps the biggest surprise though. I didn’t want my family to feel deprived or to “suffer” because I was eating a different way. So, I baked our traditional cookies and I bought a LOT of party/holiday foods.
The surprising thing was that no one really wanted any of it. They actually preferred the healthy foods I had on hand! My kids have already discovered that they don’t like the way they feel after eating junky food. And, even my granddaughter cuts herself off after one treat (she got ill once and doesn’t ever want to repeat that experience!). I ended up throwing away a lot of junk food and I want to remember that when Christmas rolls around next year.
In conclusion, the holidays don’t have to mean decadent food in mass quantities! And, you really can teach an old dog new tricks (or, an old mom in this case). And, instead of crowding into the nearest diet center to try and get rid of all the damage I did to my body in October, November and December, I am starting 2017 close to 30 pounds lighter!!
So, what about you? Are you ready to give Annie a call and change your definition of what holiday eating means to you? After all, Valentine’s Day and Easter are just around the corner!
