We live in a weird world and it seems to be getting weirder every day.
The other day I saw an article that topped anything I had seen before.
It was introducing a new kind of promise ring for couples. Forget about promise rings serving as a reminder to remain pure. Forget about your old-school gold or platinum wedding bands that symbolize your vows to each other. Toss those old things in the trash because apparently they’re passé.
Get ready for the new “commitment rings”!
Are you ready for this? Because seriously, you might need to sit down.
These rings are designed to make sure your partner doesn’t watch episodes of your favorite television shows without you!!!!!!!!
I am not kidding.
I actually had to look up the web-page because I was sure it was a joke. Nope. In large letters, the opening sentence read:
“Love should last longer than one season.”
Really?
According to the website; “the most common reason couples fight nowadays is watching episodes ahead of their partner.”
THAT is the most common reason people fight? Not money issues? Not the stress of raising kids, losing jobs, illness or deaths in the family? Am I supposed to believe that people are fighting over who watched a television show first?
Now, don’t get me wrong, sitting down to a show in the evening with my husband is my favorite part of the day. But, we don’t use rings. Instead, we practice this weird thing called respect and love. I wouldn’t consider watching ahead of him, because guess what? It’s not as much fun. Losing that shared experience would hurt my heart and I don’t need some bizarre ring to tell me that.
For anyone curious, the way the rings work is this: The two rings have NFC technology linked to a video streaming platform that can only be activated when the rings are together. On a mobile app, couples choose all the series they want to watch together. When the rings are together the app detects them and unblocks the series that have been chosen.
This just makes me sad.
My son (who loves technology) perhaps had the best reaction when I told him about the rings. First, he laughed. Then, he said, “So, people need instant gratification so badly that they can’t just make a commitment to another person and keep it?”
Thanks, son. You have renewed my faith in humanity. I was beginning to feel like I was the only one who found this to be the most tragic commentary on how low we’ve sunk. Because, the webpage was filled with quotes from different news sources that said things like:
“…genius piece of marketing service.”
“That’s brilliant!”
“It’s a great use of technology!”
Well, here are my quotes:
“That’s rubbish!”
“The whole idea is an insult.”
“What is this world coming to?”
The site ends by saying: “Are you ready to make a series commitment?”
I will end this blog by saying: “Keep your sad rings and I’ll keep my commitments to my loved ones on my own.”
