What does it mean to pray for an Elephant? When I was in my twenties, I prayed a foolish and audacious prayer that one day a real elephant would show up at the youth group I was the pastor of. I could think of nothing cooler than having an elephant at a youth event for the kids to ride and experience. The prayer was more of a joke with friends than a real request. We all laughed. I never prayed the prayer again.
Four years later and at a time I really needed a confirmation of God’s love for me, a real live elephant wandered into a youth group event I was leading. I immediately remembered the prayer I had prayed years before and long ago forgotten. I was overwhelmed with God’s extravagance. I was blown away by his love and remembrance of me.
But it did not stop there. God had bigger plans for that elephant than I ever understood. I had no idea that this event would germinate a movement that God was calling me to lead. I had no clue that this story would become a metaphor for encouraging people to pray huge, elephant size prayers for their own lives. I had no understanding at the time that God would call me to publish a book about praying for elephants that would go around the globe.
This week, I am here for two reasons. The first is because I believe that God has called an army of praying moms to be on the front lines! Second, I want to encourage moms all over the world to stop being afraid of praying for anything and everything.
Eph. 3:20 says that God is able to give us more that we can ever hope for or imagine. This week, I want to stand with you as we challenge God to blow our minds and spirits away as we migrate together and assault the throne of Heaven with radical and specific prayer! Are you ready to pray for your elephants? If so, then welcome to the herd!
