As a mom who commutes most days to work and who has kids in sports, I spend countless hours in my car each week. Not only does my car get used to chauffer my kids and often their friends, it often gets used as a kitchen as my kids snack or sometimes eat meals on the go from one event to the other.
Muddy shoes, gross gym bags, wet towels and all sorts of food from home made to drive-thru; my car could always use a little TLC.
Naturally, I have to include this for my spring cleaning to-do.
A theme you’ll notice in most of my cleaning posts is that I always empty out the space. Whether it be taking everything off a counter before wiping it down or out of a drawer before starting to organize it, you cannot do a thorough job unless the space is bare.
As moms, it’s impossible to even attempt a perfectly clean car. So, don’t set yourself up for failure by thinking it is. Determine what items you really do need in your car. For me, I allow things like snacks and extra bottled waters because the reality is that we are going to need them. I also keep a couple of blankets and towels because, again, we are going to need them. Every time I try to go really minimalist in what I keep in my car I will soon regret it.
Despite not being able to be free of stuff in your car, it doesn’t mean it can’t be organized. I keep something like this in my trunk that then holds all the things I regularly need like bottled waters or re-useable grocery bags.
Things like sports bags and shoes will still end up rolling around but those are the items that should be removed each day and then brought back in for the next practice or game. Should; doesn’t mean it actually will happen. During basketball season, we typically just leave my daughters bag and shoes in my car since she has games multiple times a week. Live in reality for what your life actually looks like.
A good vacuum, wipe down including the windows and removing trash is simple yet for some reason not something I regularly do. That’s why it’s on my to-do list for spring cleaning so I can make sure I actually tackle it.
My daughter taught me how to make cleaning putty that really helps remove dust and other debris. She likes doing it because it is literally making slime in the car so it feels like a win-win.
DIY Cleaning Slime:
All it takes is:
- Elmers Glue- 1 cup
- Baking Soda- 1-2 tsp (recommend 2)
- Contact Solution or Slime Activator- 2 Tbsp (I used Elmers slime activator)
Directions:
- Mix all ingredients together
- Let sit 10-15 minutes
- You now have slime/cleaning putty
Enjoy chauffeuring your kids around in a somewhat clean car. Fingers crossed it stays that way for more than 24 hours!
