The Bible is a complex book. It’s hard enough for adults to grasp, let alone children. And while rich, meaningful family devotions may be noble, they’re not always realistic or possible. If that sounds familiar to you, have no fear. Here are some nontraditional ways to teach kids stories and verses from the Bible in a way that makes things stick.

- Incorporate Verses Into Your Day. Everyone’s got memories of those little catch phrases mom always said. Be intentional and make yours Bible verses. When your kids are having a hard time remind them that “His mercies are new every morning” or greet them when they come out of their rooms with, “This is the day that the Lord has made!” Find a few phrases and sprinkle them into your vernacular. Your kids will never forget them. AllMomDoes has put together a lot of Bible memory verse coloring pages to help you!
- Online Games. Games make everything more fun! Learn the books of the Bible, review where certain events happened, and play Bible trivia with these FREE online games from The Adventure Bible! Learning the Bible has never been so engaging!
- Puppet Shows or Plays. It can be hard to truly understand a Bible story – until you have to dig deep enough to retell it. Have your child design and put on a puppet show or play retelling a not-so-well-known story in the Bible.
- Contextual Learning. No matter how many times you reinforce that a story took place in a different time and land, children visualize it in their current context. They fill in the blanks with things that are familiar rather than unfamiliar, so it can be difficult for them to get an accurate idea of how interesting some of these stories really are. Help things sink in deeper by exploring cultural and geographical context – read books, watch documentaries, and explore maps. Encourage their curiosity!
- Word Art. Have your child make word art out of a verse. Maybe they’ll write things out in rainbow letters, color a picture and write the verse below, or simply complete a coloring page. The simple act of dwelling on a single verse for a time will help it sink in. After they’re done, hang it someplace prominent so they can review it daily.
