A parable is a short story that teaches us a lesson. Jesus loved to use parables to simplify His message and make it more relatable to His audience. Most of the time, Jesus spoke to crowds of farmers, shepherds, fishermen and teachers of the law as well. That is why many of His stories/parables featured situations that were common to His followers and listeners.
Today’s craft comes from Luke 15: 1-7 where Jesus tells the story of a shepherd who left 99 of his sheep to find just 1 lost one. The one that went missing was not negligible compared to the 99 in the shepherd’s eyes. He valued the one just as much as he valued the 99. This story/parable teaches us that God cares about us as individuals. He values YOU personally and Jesus would have still died on the cross even if it was only one person that needed saving.
For this craft activity you will need the following:
• Green, brown and white paper
• Glue
• Tape
• Black colors or crayons
• Scissors
Step 1: Cut out fluffy sheep outlines from the white paper.
Step 2: Cut out a rock shape from the brown paper, making it a little larger than the sheep.
Step 3: Glue your sheep to the green paper, leaving one a little separate from the others.
Step 4: Draw a head and legs on all the sheep.
Step 5: Cover the sheep that is separate from the others with the rock and use some tape only at the top of the rock to stick it onto the green paper.
Step 6: Draw a shepherd with staff in hand on the green paper.
Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” Luke 15:3-7
