Looking for a way to attract bees and toads to your garden? These cute houses and baths work great! They are fun to decorate but you can also leave them plain if you’d like, there are lots of possibilities! I love finding ways to make the garden more desirable for the creatures we rely on to keep it healthy and growing! Toads keep the bug population under control and of course we need the bees to stay and pollinate! Grab your kids or grandkids and show them how to add some fun and function to the garden!
Toad House
Give the toads and frogs a cool, wet place to rest on a hot day and they will be more likely to stick around!
You’ll need:
- Any smaller size pot (I use terra cotta because they stay nice and cool, but plastic or ceramic are great!)
- A small tray or bowl to keep water on nearby
- Pebbles, rocks, and ground cover plants (optional)
- Acrylic paint markers or acrylic paint (optional)
- Find a spot in your garden or landscaping for your toad house.
- Decorate your pot! (optional)
- Shade gardens work best because toads like shade!
- Flip your pot upside down and place either a rock under the edge to prop it up or set one edge of it on the water tray.
- You can also put half of the pot in the soil so it’s more like a cave.
- Ground cover plants such as Creeping Thyme or Irish Moss keep the ground cooler and would work great planted near a toad house! (I placed mine under some Hosta leaves)
- Putting some pebbles and rocks in the water tray is also an option.
- You could even make a little Toad House neighborhood with different houses/pots scattered throughout your garden beds!
Bee Bath
Bees need water breaks, too! They don’t only drink it, but they also use it in their hives to stay cool. They can drown if there isn’t a safe way for them to access the water, so that’s where the rocks come in. Keep them safe and hydrated this summer while also adding a pretty feature to your garden!
You’ll need:
- Ceramic bowl (any heavy bowl will work)
- Old pot
- Rocks
- Find a good spot near your veggies and flowers.
- Set the pot on the soil, upside down. This will serve as the table for your bowl.
- Arrange the rinsed off rocks in the bowl, fill with water so that some rocks are still sticking out.
- Refill bath as needed, I wash mine out every week or so.
I hope these help to brighten up your garden during these lovely, sunny months!
