Growing Together Through God's Word [Read Malachi 2:17-3:5] Reflection on the passage: Have you ever seen the process of gold being refined by fire? The gold is heated up to its melting point of 1947.52 degrees Fahrenheit, and then the impurities rise to the surface and are removed. The fire doesn't destroy the gold but rather purifies it and make it even more valuable. Malachi uses this analogy for God's purifying of His people on "the day of his coming" (3:2) in this week's prophetic passage. "Where is the God of justice?," the people ask cynically (2:17). They have lost faith in God and no longer take right and wrong seriously (2:17), perhaps no longer expecting Him to return to His temple as of old (3:1). The answer to their question comes at the beginning of chapter 3. The God of justice is coming! First God's messenger will come to prepare the way (3:1), and we know from the New Testament that this is ultimately fulfilled in John the Baptist who prepares the way for Jesus (Mark 1:2, Matthew 11:10, Luke 7:27). Yet as much as the people say they desire God's coming, they don't understand that this will mean a painful purification process as well as judgement: "But who can endure the day of his coming? Who will stand when he appears?" (3:2). Malachi tells us that this coming One will be like a refiner's fire and launderer's soap (3:2). And we know this One to be our Lord Jesus, the Son of God and the Righteous One! Jesus' first coming is part of what is in view here - when Jesus powerfully challenged the religious leaders with His teaching, dealt with sin at its root, and cleansed us from sin through His death and resurrection. His purifying fire does not destroy but makes us righteous, bringing God's people into right relationship with Him once again (3:3-4). The day of His coming also refers to His second coming in which Christ will sit as judge over all. The last verse of this passage points to this day of judgment. Malachi mentions here a full range of sins that his contemporaries must have fallen into, not unlike sins of our day: sorcery, adultery, lying, and injustice toward laborers, the vulnerable, and the foreigners living among them (3:5). The sinful will come before the Judge (3:5). So rather than ask, "Where is the God of justice?," may we welcome the Refiner's fire, the Holy Spirit's transforming work within us, knowing that He disciplines those whom He loves (Hebrews 12:6). And may we then be conduits of His right and just ways in our personal and societal relationships. Focus verse for prayerful reflection: "But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner's fire or a launderer's soap." (Malachi 3:2) Take some quiet moments with this verse. What emotions surface as you read this? Fear? Longing? Awe? Conviction? When have you experienced God's refining fire or his cleansing "soap" in your life? Spend some time in an open posture to Jesus. -Chaplain Jill Young | CRISTA Ministries Photo: Johannes Plenlo
