How many times do we go through each day on autopilot? We wake up, take care of our family, do some housework, cook some dinner, and head to bed. We expect the next day to be more or less similar.
As moms, we always think about the future, but it’s usually our kids’ futures. The fact that we’re there with them is always a given in our minds.
But what if it’s not?
Halo Found Hope is the memoir of Helo Matzelle, a woman whose world revolved around her family until it got thrown off its axis. One day she was taking care of her kids and husband, and the next she was diagnosed with a serious brain tumor.
The book is divided into two parts – the first half detailing the diagnosis, complicated surgery, and lengthy, difficult recovery; the second half addressing more of the ongoing challenges resulting from the ordeal along with Helo’s insights into how she manages to live day-to-day joyfully in the midst of trial and difficulty.
Reading through this book, I realized something: though Helo’s medical story is miraculous and compelling, what’s even more compelling is her commitment to use this trial for good. Though she suffered (and continues to struggle with physical and mental challenges related to her tumor), she reaches out to help and support others who are going through their own difficult times. Instead of withdrawing into a place of self-pity that she was allowed to go through this trial and have her life permanently altered, she embraces it. She can see the good in the situation and praises God for this as a blessing – yes, blessing – in her life.
Helo is a wonderful example of a woman who can give thanks in all circumstances while being obedient to God and allowing Him to use her to bless other people. As you read through this book your heart will break as you walk with her through the shock of her diagnosis, you’ll be in awe of the miracles that happened which allowed her to survive the trauma, and you’ll be inspired as you learn more about her heart and commitment to her Jesus even during the most unfair of circumstances.
Halo Found Hope will help you remember to get out of autopilot mode. It will inspire you to live each day for the unique gift that it is and help you look for opportunities to reach out and help others.
If after all that she went through Helo could find hope, I’m confident that you can, too.
