It seems silly really, but my daughter came up to me the other day and said, “I think we can make s’mores over the toaster. Can we try?” I didn’t really want to, honestly. I was busy trying to get dinner done and picking up around the house, but my daughter had such an expectant look on her face I realized I needed to slow down and do something fun.
Life can get like that, right? We often get stuck in the daily grind that we don’t stop to enjoy something. This is my simple reminder to you that it’s okay to stop the chores. It’s okay to turn off work for awhile. It’s okay to take a moment with your kids and just do something that isn’t that important but builds relationship and togetherness. You have permission!
So here we are. Attempting to make a S’more using the toaster.
Here is what we used:
- Honey Maid Graham Crackers (but you can use your favorite brand)
- Hershey’s Chocolate Bars (My husband prefers peanut butter cups!)
- Large Size Marshmallows (Generic brand)
- Skewers
- Toaster
As you can see my toaster is just a normal one like this. I recommend having it on the most amount of time you can. Ours goes up to 8. The higher temp was about perfect.
It takes a bit of patience waiting for the marshmallow. Brace yourself for when the toaster makes its popping sound at the end. It might startle you. we ended up giggling because we jumped so high.
Other than the delicious tasting outcome, here are some other benefits of this fun little idea:
- Mother/Daughter bonding. Stop what you are doing and make the silly things happen. They will be remembered.
- Laughter is good medicine, always. That stress I talked about at the beginning. Much easier to manage after a little laughter.
- Our moods were instantly improved after the fun and my daughter spent time away from her computer thinking of creative things to try and test.
- The simple things are always the most fun!
When was the last time you allowed yourself to say yes to your kids when they asked you to do something like this? Hopefully you do it more regularly than me. I’m sad to admit that my to do list, my calendar and my general attitude often get in the way. Now is the time to make it happen. It doesn’t have to be toaster s’mores, but it can be something simple and fun. Give it a try!
