Here we are, almost to Father’s Day and still not out of the Coronavirus woods. For those of us in certain counties of states like Washington, we have not even quite made it fully to “phase 2” yet. This means we are still under somewhat strict stay at home orders. Typically, we do a friends and family barbeque but since that consists of more than five people, our plans have to shift this year. Here are some ideas for the dad or dads in your life so they can feel celebrated and loved despite traditions having to shift for this year.
Gift Ideas
Start now with ordering a gift because many companies have delayed shipping during this current environment.
Lounge Wear- With many people working from home or just staying home in general, gift dad with a new pair of joggers or t-shirt. Items like these are fun yet practical.
Desk Accessories– My husband never used to telecommute and now he is stuck at home doing so until at least September, per guidance of his company. Think about items to spruce up a desk, items to help keep him organized (especially if his desk is also your kitchen table) or just something cute.
Yard Toys- He’ll have so much fun with items like these he might not even realize he’s doing chores!
Socialize Responsibly
Driveway Drinks- This has become my favorite thing to do during stay at home orders. Have limited guests bring their own chairs, beverages and even a little snack while sitting in a driveway or garage six feet apart. It’s a great way to get in person time while still being responsible.
Video Chat– You have probably discovered the many apps out there that allow you to video chat with your loved ones. Zoom, Face Time and House Party are all ones that I frequently use. Set something up or surprise a dad in your life whom you can’t see in person this year. Maybe even have the whole family join to really let him know he’s loved.
Drive by Visit- by now, you are probably familiar with the latest way to celebrate birthday parties; a caravan of cars circling the block while the birthday boy or girl stands outside to see everyone. You could do this same idea with dads day!
Get Out of the House
Depending on where your city is for stay at home orders, your options might be super limited for what you can actually do or where you can go. But don’t let that stop you from getting creative or looking up what is allowed.
Golf- When golf was opened back up, my husband went twice in one weekend. There may still be rules around how many are allowed in a golf cart etc but check out courses around you and see if you can book a tee time for dad!
Walk for To Go Food– We live within walking distance to the downtown area of our city so my husband and I make little date afternoons by walking to get to-go food. Sure, the kids are in front of us on bikes but we like to pretend it’s time just to ourselves. Treat dad to take out food if you are still in an area where restaurants are not fully open or you don’t yet feel comfortable in crowds.
Take a Hike– It’s likely hiking trails are open in your city or nearby. Pack up a lunch (day drinks included if you so desire!) and take dad on an outdoor adventure. Check out these ideas in Western Washington here and here. Or these 6 great family-friendly hikes in the Ozarks.
Weekend Get-Away– Think about renting a house or condo or even camping to get out of the house for a couple of days. We did this and while the pools remained closed, it was just nice to get out of our house for a couple of nights.
No matter how you celebrate, given today’s new normal, it will likely be one to remember!
