PARENT: “How was school?”
CHILD: “Fine.”
PARENT: “What did you do today?”
CHILD: “Nothing.”
Does this sound familiar? There are times when talking to your child feels like pulling teeth.
Part of the problem is timing. After a day of learning and social interactions, kids are naturally burnt-out and need some time to rest and recharge before conversing. But also, “How was school?” is such a broad question with so many possible answers. It’s just too heavy for after-school talks.
To make carpools and dinner table conversations a little more fun, we’ve gathered some different questions to ask your children. Not only are they more fun to answer, but they teach kids creative thinking, problem solving and how to use humor.
Here they are:
- What was your worst nightmare?
- Would you rather live in the woods, the mountains or by the sea?
- What superpower would you want and why?
- If you had a time machine, what year would you go to?
- You just won a million dollars, what’s the first thing you would buy?
- If the sky rained food, what food would you want it to be?
- What animal does each family member remind you of?
- If you could change your name, what would you change it to?
- What would you change your sibling’s name to?
- Describe a perfect day.
- What song could you listen to over and over again?
- If you found a genie, what would your three wishes be?
- What’s the best job in the world? The worst?
- What five books would you take to a deserted island?
- What five tools would you take to a deserted island?
- What is your favorite dinner and dessert?
- What famous person would you want to meet?
- What five people would you invite to a dinner party?
- What is the grossest food you have ever eaten?
- What person from the past would you want to meet?
- Create a pizza with weird toppings that you’d actually eat.
- If you were a parent for a day, what rules would you make?
- What scares you the most?
- What makes you laugh the hardest?
- If you dug for treasure, what would you want the treasure to be?
- What would a movie about you be called? Who would star in it?
- Would you rather be a bird or a fish?
- What can’t you wait to do when you’re grown?
- If one of your toys could come to life, which one would you choose?
- If you could be an animal for a day, what animal would you be?
- If you could start a collection, what would you collect?
- If you could go anywhere, where would you go?
There you have it! Fun questions to recharge the family’s mood after a long day. DO try this at home!
