I can remember like it was just a few years ago the excitement we felt in our home associated with Easter when I was growing up. For us, it meant getting new dresses, which was a rare in our home. It also meant coloring Easter eggs and putting our basket out for the Easter bunny. My most special memories, though, were the family lunches at my grandparents’ home after church on Easter Sunday. My grandfather was the pastor of a church about forty-five minutes from our home. On Easter Sunday, we went to church with my grandparents and then went to their home for lunch and an over-the-top Easter egg hunt with great prizes. I don’t remember everything about the messages preached on those Sundays but I do remember the time I spent connecting with my family and the special memories we made back then. There is something so wonderful about creating memories our kids can look back on with delight. Even more important, however, are creating faith-filled memories with our kids. We have an opportunity to model for our kids how to have faith conversations with their families one day.
For the Israelites, God put specific holidays on their yearly calendar to celebrate as a family so they could share His story with the next generation. Easter is an opportunity for us to share His story with the next generation. This Easter consider going beyond the Easter bunny and hiding eggs to sharing with your kids all that Jesus did for them.
One of the resources we loved doing with our kids were the Resurrection Eggs. The Resurrection Eggs are a set of a dozen eggs with a symbol inside each egg which represents a part of the events leading up to Jesus’ death and resurrection. When our kids were preschoolers to elementary age, these eggs were a part of our routine leading up to Easter before bed.
Perhaps more than any other time, it’s important our kids have a solid understanding of their faith and the Bible. As our kids have gotten older, there are some great resources by Lee Strobel you could read together as a family. One of my personal favorites is Lee Strobel’s book, The Case for Christ For Kids. This book helps strengthen your kids understanding of Jesus, by “providing compelling support for Jesus’ life, ministry, and miracles”.
Another great resource for families is Faith and Family Box. Faith and Family Box is a monthly subscription resource which comes with everything a family needs to create faith-filled memories that will last well beyond the time you spend doing the box together. Each box comes with a snack to make, conversation questions, game, and an interactive family devotion. The box includes a guide to walk parents through the experience making it easy for parents and grandparents to enjoy their time together. It is also themed out each month to keep the experience new and fun.
This Easter Season set aside time to create faith-filled memories with your kids and leave the legacy of faith you long to see continued for generations.
