Nothing makes you feel more like you’re under a microscope than accepting the title of Foster Mom. You’ve got case managers watching you and biological families and juvenile officers and CASA workers and your own family members, not to mention actual courtroom judges. It can sometimes seem like no one thinks you’re doing the right thing, yourself included. Listen here, sister:
You’re a good foster mom if you use respite.
You’re a good foster mom if you don’t.
You’re a good foster mom if you befriend and mentor bio mom.
You’re a good foster mom if you don’t.
You’re a good foster mom if you include your foster children in professional family photos.
You’re a good foster mom if you don’t.
You’re a good foster mom if you go to every single meeting.
You’re a good foster mom if you don’t.
You’re a good foster mom if you’re open to the idea of adoption one day.
You’re a good foster mom if you never adopt.
Listen, if you are respectful of your foster children’s families, if you are doing the best you can to make your bonus children feel like they belong in your family while still acknowledging their bio families, if you are loving those babies without reservation and giving them a safe place to heal and grow then YOU ARE A GOOD FOSTER MOM.
Don’t worry about what people think because YOU know your family. You know your kids. You know your heart.
