Reading through Proverbs 31, most ladies will admit to being intimidated by the Proverbs 31 wife. I’ve often asked myself how I could ever measure up to that super high standard!? On my own I absolutely cannot. However, thankfully, by the power of the Holy Spirit whom God gives to all who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me. And boy do I need that strength.
I love how the Amplified Bible translates Philippians 4:13 I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me. [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.]
The book of Proverbs is such a rich resource for wise living. One which I highly recommend you read or listen to daily. One chapter for each day of the month (making adjustments by reading or listening to more chapters on the last day for those months with less than 31 days). It will absolutely change your life as you let that God given wisdom richly dwell with in your heart and as you live it out in your day to day. A clever hack to include this wealth of wisdom into your daily life is to listen to the Proverb of the day as you cook or clean or do your hair or take a walk and as you are on the road driving from one activity to another. A quick YouTube search of Proverbs Audio Bible will lead you to the chapter of the day, so you can incorporate it into your routine. It’s only about a 3-minute listen after all.
As a wife and mother, I’m especially drawn to the last chapter. Proverbs. 31 from verse 10 to verse 31.
The way this woman of God runs her household is exemplary! So many moving parts and yet she seamlessly accomplishes her task each day. The virtue of discipline and planning is one that is greatly embodied by the woman described in Proverbs 31. There is such a rich treasurer of lessons to learn from these 21 verses. I could write a book!
Today, however, I make special note of verse 15 which reinforces that I need to be more willing to accept help when it will benefit me and my household. Being a Proverbs 31 woman does not mean doing it all by myself, but rather having the foresight to delegate and the humility to accept help.
When we had our first baby, I did not accept much help, feeling like it took away from me being a virtuous woman. I needed to take care of every single thing in my home personally which left me so exhausted and frustrated. By the time baby number two came along you did not have to ask me twice! I not only accepted help, but I also boldly requested it on various occasions. It had never occurred to me before that not accepting help when you need it can be a form of pride and I’m so grateful to God for working His humility in me.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
As Moms, we need God’s wisdom to be able to delegate tasks accordingly and accept help from the people God has placed in our lives.
Exodus 18:14-15 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?”
