Have you ever lost your child at the mall? It has happened to more parents than you would imagine. In fact, the same thing happened to Jesus’ parents. That’s right, the parents of the Messiah lost Him. Theirs was worse actually because they lost him for a whole day! He was 12. The good news is that after his parents finally found Him, the Bible is very careful to point out to us that the boy Jesus went and was obedient to His parents from then on. So, there is hope for us all parents!
Luke 2:51-52 – He went down to Nazareth with them and was continually submissive and obedient to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and men.
The reaction from Mary, the Mother of Jesus is so typical of a Mom that has been worried our of her mind over her child. I bet she did not get a wink of sleep until Jesus was found. Her exact words were, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” Luke 2:48
Our children are growing and becoming more independent and I’m learning to be less of a helicopter parent by God’s grace. This means I am constantly praying and covering them with the blood of Jesus and asking God to fill them with His Holy Spirit as I entrust them into God’s capable care. God is sovereign and He is also omnipresent which means He can be at all places at the same time, which I can not. He is also all powerful which means He is able to protect and defend them in ways I could not even possibly do. God is all wise and omnipotent. And above all, this is the God that has promised to never leave or forsake my children. To protect them as the apple of His eye. They are in better hands with Him than they are with me if I’m being honest. You would think I’m sending them off to war…no, this just me sending them to go play with their friends. An hour of unsupervised playtime in the enclosed playground of our homeschool community Church grounds while I chat with other Moms in the kitchen a few yards away.
Whatever stage of the Mom journey you are on, may you be filled with joy by the Holy Spirit. Luke 10:21 - At that time Jesus was filled with joy by the Holy Spirit and said, “Father, Lord of heaven and earth! I thank you because you have shown to the unlearned what you have hidden from the wise and learned. Yes, Father, this was how you were pleased to have it happen.
One verse I always pray over myself is that I will be a joyful mother to our children, and I pray the same for you Mom. I ask that you will be filled with joy by the Holy Spirit as you go about your amazing role as Mom and Wife. Psalm 113:9 – Making her the joyous mother of children.
