Dear Mom,
I have a question for you…
How are you caring for your heart these days?
- Maybe it’s two o’clock in the morning and you are up rocking a fussy baby.
- Maybe you are singing “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider” to your toddler for the 48th time today.
- Maybe it’s a school day afternoon and you are waiting in the pick-up line.
- Maybe you’re on the sideline of another day of soccer practice.
- Maybe you’re waiting up late for a teenager to come home by their curfew.
Wherever you are, it’s another day in your motherhood journey, and you are pouring out your heart, your time, and your efforts for the little people that God chose to steward to you. And when you are caught up, busy, and constantly considering the needs and wants of these sweet little ones, it’s hard to hear what your own heart desires.
Remember in the days before kids? You would daydream about the things you wanted to accomplish, the things that mattered to you. There were aspirations that you were so deeply passionate about that your heart would race when you’d think about chasing them.
And in the sweet unfolding of becoming a mom, it was right and good that those things would move aside. But we don’t want them to disappear altogether.
As moms, we are called to die to ourselves and pour our lives into serving our families and raising our children. But that does not negate the giftedness that God so perfectly placed within us. He still made us to have dreams and hopes, to have things that matter to us, things we are passionate about.
As you do your pouring out, your waiting, and your serving, consider the dreams that once mattered deeply to you. Momma, don’t give up on those things! This motherhood season is supposed to be all-encompassing but at the end of the day, you are still you, a creation of a most loving and holy Father. Allow Him to kindle the dreams that He placed in your heart, whether they formed before you were a mom, or have come along after.
You, momma, were made to be the mom that you are to the children you’ve been given. And you honor God by loving them, caring for them, and sacrificing for them. But you also honor Him by being the creative, unique, and passionate dreamer that He made you to be. Don’t you forget that.
It’s easy as a mom to spend your days dreaming for everyone else. Don’t forget to dream for yourself, because your dreams matter, too.
Love,
A fellow dreamer mom
