I love all those cute seasonal welcome signs that pop up in the home decor aisle throughout the year. But I’ve never bought one as a matter of practicality; I don’t have a ton of extra storage in my house and it’s hard for me to justify buying a bunch of {not inexpensive} signs to keep changing throughout the year.
Enter: my latest DIY project. I made a front porch sign that I can customize to my liking all year long. The whole project isn’t very complicated, but here are some tips on how I put mine together.
You’ll need:
- long wooden board (or planks)
- paint or stain
- “welcome” letters (I got mine at Hobby Lobby) Alternative: paint or stencil the letters on, or use vinyl lettering if you have a Cricut – or buy some letters off of Etsy!
- spray paint (for letters)
- liquid nails or other adhesive
- screw
- seasonal wreaths or decor
Measure your front porch or entryway where you plan to put your sign so you know what size is appropriate.
Choose your letters before you buy your board so you know what size you need. I used pine shelving, but you could also make something more rustic-looking by piecing 3 planks together instead.
Space out your letters on your board to determine where to cut it.
Spray paint your letters; do 2-3 light coats.
Paint or stain your board. Do this to your liking! I chose white paint because the light color will contrast well with our dark-colored house; I used a thin coat to let the wood show through. You could also opt to stain your board for a more natural-looking wood sign.
Space out your letters before affixing them to the board. Place some of your wreaths/seasonal decor on the sign to see how they look. In my case, I decided to leave a little extra space where the “o” would go in order for the decor to look like it’s spaced appropriately.
Affix your letters to the board using the adhesive of your choice. I chose liquid nails because it was a more heavy-duty option and our sign will be outside.
Install your screw. Place it according to the seasonal decor piece that will be least forgiving. For me, it was a hanging floral container. The placement on any wreaths can be finessed with wires or hangers in the back; for this container, the screw will always be visible so it needed to be placed correctly.
Decorate and change the sign at your whim! Think outside of typical wreaths and get creative. Use hanging floral containers, seasonal bows, metal pumpkin or Easter egg wall hangings – the possibilities are endless!
