If you’ve been following my attic story, you already know a couple things:
- We had rats back in the day so we had our attic cleaned to get out the yuck.
- We had only 4 inches of insulation in the whole attic (the recommended amount was 16 inches!)
- We recently hired Crawl Pros to insulate our attic and have been documenting our experience.
All that aside, I know the real question you are asking: Does having an insulated attic REALLY help the temperature in your house as much as they say? One of the big selling points to me was that it will help pay for itself because we will see a decrease in expenses in our energy costs.
Here is the result in our house so far.
Rebecca received discounted service from Crawl Pros for her honest review.
We have had our attic insulated for a little over a month now – about 6 total weeks. In looking at outside temperatures year over year they have been comparable. So that means we’ve had about the same average outside temps last year during the 6 weeks I looked at when comparing my energy costs. Also, one this is very different this year that we should note. We are at home ALL THE TIME. Every second of most days is spent at our house. Last year, we were not here during the days. We went to the office and we brought our kids to summer camp. During the times we are out of the house, we always had our adjustable thermostat turn off or very low so it wasn’t kicking on.
The Result
In July 2019 we used 17 therms of energy. In July 2020 we used 7 therms of energy! Wow, that is a big difference! That essentially cut our bill IN HALF! Again, the same average temperatures recorded outside was about the same year over year and we are at home now all day every day. Knowing all that, I’m pretty excited about what we’ve experienced so far. It will be especially great to see how we do in the winter months!
And what about in the heat?
We’ve had some really hot days so far this week. It reached 95 degrees on Monday! Normally the scene in our house is my husband wandering from room to room talking about how hot he is and how we need to purchase central air.
This year?
He kept wandering from room to room talking about how cool it is in our house! We do not have central air and it stayed about 78 degrees in our house! It was an actual comfortable temperature, we slept fine and we were SHOCKED.
6 weeks in and I can tell you that insulating your attic will absolutely affect the temperature in your house. I wasn’t convinced it would make as much of a difference as it did! I am maybe even slightly looking forward to winter. Maybe. And, just for fun, our energy usage is usually way higher on the chart the energy company uses to compare us with our neighbors and now…WAY LOWER! I know it’s not a competition…but we are winning. Thanks to Crawl Pros!
