Easter is on its way! Egg hunts are usually part of the fun for younger kids, but what about your older kids who would still appreciate a fun activity to look forward to? An Easter scavenger hunt is the perfect solution! It can be as easy or difficult as you’d like and you can tailor it to any age group. My older boys were ten and thirteen last year and they had a blast tackling their scavenger hunt! They aren’t so old that they don’t want to participate in the festivities, but aren’t young enough to find much of a thrill in a classic Egg Hunt.
I gave them each a set of their own riddles, about ten to fifteen of them which took around 20 minutes. The more complicated ones went to my oldest but they both had some challenging clues! I gave them each a “hint” card good for one hint if they were stumped. Here in the Pacific Northwest, it’s not uncommon to have rain on Easter Sunday, so I did about half of the clues indoors and the rest outdoors. You could do either one or a mix of both! Leave a special treat or prize at the finish line, and voila! Egg hunts, bunnies, and candy may not be the real reason we celebrate Easter, but it’s still nice to have something for everyone to do-especially when you have a big age range of children. I hope your family has a wonderful Easter!
Getting Started:
You’ll need:
- Small to medium sized note-cards. (or any paper cut to fit inside of a plastic egg)
- Plastic eggs
Number the cards so you can keep track.
Match each riddle to an answer key that you hold onto.
Fold up the clue cards and stuff each one inside of an egg marked with the number that matches the numbered clue, as well as the initials of the child it’s for just to make sure they don’t get mixed up!
Hide the eggs in accordance with the proper clues. Hide the prize in the location that matches the final clue!
You could also do a different style of egg for each child.
Hand them the egg with the first clue, and off they go!
To make it even more exciting, you can time them and give an extra treat to the one who finishes first! There are loads of scavenger hunt riddles online, but here are 25 to get you started! I used many of these riddles last year and they seemed to be a pretty good mix for the 9-14 year old age group. Happy hunting!
