My eight year old daughter had a friend coming over after school the other day and wanted to have a fun project planned for us to do. I wasn’t really in the mood for baking or anything that would leave my kitchen in a huge mess. I decided to make fall scented play dough. The result was really cute and the girls had a really fun time making it. A medium level of messy and only a few ingredients, most of which I already had on hand. I highly recommend if you are looking for some easy and fun kid entertainment.
You will need:
- Salt (2/3 cup)
- Flour (2 cups)
- Cream of Tartar (4 Tbsp)
- Oil (2 Tbsp)
- Food coloring (think fall colors)
- Cinnamon
- Maple Extract
- Pumpkin Extract or Pumpkin Spice (I used ground all spice but highly recommend pumpkin)
- Water (2 cups)
- Optional Wax Paper/Parchment Paper
- Optional Glitter/Sprinkles
- Optional Cookie Cutters (think fall like leaves and pumpkin shapes)
Directions: (watch the video for a full how-to)
- In a large bowl, mix salt, flour and cream of tartar
- Add oil to a large skillet (no heat)
- Add mixed dry ingredients to the skillet
- Add in water
- Turn heat on low to medium and give it a good stir
- It will start off resembling pancake batter but after a few minutes will thicken
- Continue to stir until it’s no longer gooey
- Turn off heat
- Allow to cool then transfer onto parchment or wax paper
- Split into three even parts
- Pick a theme for each of the parts
Recommendations:
Apple Pie– use red food coloring and cinnamon, add to the dough and knead until it smells like apple pie
Pumpkin– use food coloring, add in pumpkin extract/spice (here is where I used all spice) until it smells like pumpkin
Maple– just like the others, knead in food coloring and maple extract until it smells like maple - Add in glitter/sprinkles if you like and use cookie cutters to make fall shapes.
Have fun!
