Sarah Taylor: Thank you for your time. I’ve got lots of questions for you about your book and your movie but just a 30 second quick background. I’m 37 so I grew up with you and we are probably just going to have to get this song out of the way.
Sarah: Can you hear the music. This is the theme song to my childhood.
Candace: Yes. Oh my goodness. The TGIF!
Sarah: I had VHS tapes dedicated just to Full House in my 6th grade handwriting “DO NOT TAPE OVER” shedding literal tears if one of my parents deleted an episode.
Candace: That’s awesome.
Sarah: Kids these days don’t understand the work we went to to record something.
Candace: It’s so true. I know.
Sarah: Now I love 37-year old me gets to follow along with your Instagram and with great new projects like this book, Staying Stylish. There’s so many beautiful pictures in here. It’s kinda like your most stylish friend that you always want to go shopping with. You get a how-to feature. Is that kinda your hope for this book?
Candace: Totally! I had so much fun writing and even going through all the photos of style over the years. You know, a lot of people ask me through social media what my skincare is like or how I do my hair and what kind of brand clothing do I like. All that stuff. So, I do want this to feel like your best friend is hanging out with ya and I’m telling you all my best secrets, tips and tricks in the beauty world. But, you know, one of the other parts that I really love about the book that I think sets it apart from other style books is that I talk a lot about healthy living from the inside out. So as far as fitness and taking care of yourself spiritually and eating well. All those kinds of things are in this book so hopefully it is one of those books you’ll grab and keep going back into to remind and refresh yourself and enjoy it over the years.
Sarah: It’s really classic. you know, It’s not these trendy magazines you could probably spend the same amount of money on just a couple magazines and end up with just a bunch of advertisements anyway. I feel like this is a much better approach.
Candace: It’s so true. thank you. I appreciate that. It is classic and I think that’s why people have asked me about my fashion and my routine and those kinds of things because I am a working mom of three and while I love some things that are on trend, my style has stayed very classic over the years and I want to be comfortable and always feel like myself. That’s what I want the readers to do as well and not in any way feel pressured to look like someone out of a fashion magazine or be wearing the latest thing if it just doesn’t feel right for them. This goes back to the basics.
Sarah: You mentioned being a working mom of 3. You’re still a hockey mom, up early in the morning. And, we are going to talk about your gorgeous daughter when we talk about the movie because she makes an appearance, well more than an appearance in it, but tell me what you love about being a mom.
Candace: Being a mom grows your character in so many ways. It matures you. I’ve loved seeing that in myself. But then caring for another human being. It becomes the most selfless thing you can do which is why you grow in your character. I love that. I think the best parts of me when my kids just love me back, when they hug on me and want to be with me. It’s unbelievable. What’s not to love about being a mom?
Sarah: You’ve made a very conscious decision to invite a lot of people into your life via social media. I mean just the other night on Instagram you posted a quick little video of yourself talking, I think you were filming in Vancouver and you said, “I just really miss my family.” And, you just put that out there.
Candace: Yeah, I love social media. I think it’s really fun. It’s a great way for me to connect with friends and fans and people who’ve grown up alongside me. But you know I am who I am. What you see is what you get. I like to be honest and open. I try not to overshare but….I think it’s great as girlfriends we always want to feel like there is someone else going through what we are going through, something relatable or just say ah, this is happening to someone else. Or share the joys and triumphs of my life. I’m just me. I’m always hoping in some way it might encourage or inspire someone along the way.
Sarah: Let’s talk about this movie that is going to give us an excuse to get in our cozy sweatpants the Sunday after Thanksgiving because, let’s face it, you hear Hallmark Christmas movie and you just know you are going to tune out the world, get in bed, grab a snack and cozy up and I love that you actually play twins in Switched for Christmas. You’re bringing back the TGIF Full House split screen. You guys did that all the time.
Candace: Yeah! Technology has grown a lot more than the TGIF days so hopefully this will look much better than the split screen. We actually had a good technodolly that we used that some of these other shows have used when there is one actor playing multiple characters. I hope the fans love it. It was such a challenge to play multiple roles and act against myself. It was sometimes incredibly difficult but fun nevertheless and I loved getting to work with my daughter. She plays my daughter in the movie. I hope everyone enjoys it. It’s my annual thing. I put a Christmas movie out every single year but I am always try to find a great script and make it different and top the last one I did and hope viewers love it.
Sarah: How are you going to top twins and your daughter next year? At some point..I know right? You’ve painted yourself in a corner now.
Candace: I know.
Sarah: So obviously on our radio station we play Christian music. I know your faith plays a big role in what you do. What are some of your favorite artists? What are you listening to?
Candace: Oh Goodness. I mostly listen to Christian music. Third Day & Mac Powell. His voice is just one of my favorites. I love Lauren Daigle. She’s great. I love Hillsong. There’s so many. Matthew West -he still has my favorite Christmas album of all time. Even if it isn’t Christmas it’s so good.
Sarah: That’s a great list. Is there anything about the book or the film that I didn’t cover that you would like to have the platform to say?
Candace: No, you totally covered it. The only other thing is the 2nd half of Season 3 of Fuller House will be out Dec 22nd.
Sarah: Oh, I love it.
Candace: We left everyone with a big cliffhanger when we premiered season 3 in September. The wait is not too much longer and you’ll get to find out what happened to everyone. Stephanie and her baby. DJ, Matt and Steve. All that kind of stuff.
Sarah: Can you take me back to the day when you got a phone call that this might be a possibility.
Candace: Well, it didn’t quite happen like that. We actually had gotten together with the creator of the show and we actually went out and pitched the show to several networks. Funny enough now all the networks had passed on the show and the Netflix was our very last pitch. They took the show and we were all so excited when they did and everything had worked out for us to get back together and do it. It was a very joyous day but even better when we premiered and saw the fans absolutely loved it and we knew the core audience that had followed us for 30 years tuned in. It was pretty incredible.
Sarah: Well, I think people are going to be opening their Christmas gifts early (Netflix subscription!) and because you’re right. Passionate core fans. There’s no way it can come out on 12/22 and then they are gonna wait until 12/25.
Candace: We’ve ruined a lot of people’s Christmas Eve’s.
Sarah: That’s a great note to end on. Candace you are the best. Thank you for your time.
Candace: You’re so welcome. Thank you. Have a great day.
Sarah: Same to you. Bye.
