Whenever we take our children out to the park or playground, one of the rules is; you must always be where I can see you. Make sure you can see me, and I can see you. From time to time, I will notice the children check if we can see them, then smile and go on with their fun. There is a confident security that comes to the children with knowing that as their Mom or Dad, I’ve got my loving, watchful, protective eye on them. Ready to spring into action if any danger should arise. Ready to provide assistance if they need me, for example when they climb too high, I can safely carry them down. Since they are constantly able to see where I am, they can easily access any supplies from me like tissue to wipe their nose, water to soothe their thirst or a yummy snack to refuel their bodies before they run back full throttle into their activities screaming with glee.
We try our best to always have a loving watchful eye on our children but are not able to watch them nonstop. We look away to answer a text, we catch ourselves gazing into the distance deep in thought or if we have had a particularly long week, we might even catch ourselves taking an unplanned power nap! That is because we are human beings. Which is all the more reason that I feel so comforted to know that the Almighty God is watching over me and over all my loved ones. God never takes His loving watchful eye off of us. The Scriptures tell us that our God, the One who watches over us will never sleep or slumber. He never gets tired, never blinks, never looks away. No. Not even for one moment.
This beautiful Bible passage in Psalm 121 continues on to say that because God sees us and watches us, we are guarded by God Himself! And so, you will be safe when you leave your home, and safe when you return. Hallelujah! That brings me so much peace. To know that God sees my going out and coming in, and watches over me to take me out safely and bring me back safely too. He sees my husband and children in their going out and coming in and guards them Himself! To take them out in safely and to bring them home back safely as well. Every single time without growing faint or weak or weary, without blinking and missing a microsecond of it all. What a wonderful, caring and capable God we serve! I pray that the knowledge of this, the reminder of the kind of God we have on our side who not only sees us but is Mighty to protect and guard us too, I pray that this truth gives you so much peace and assurance as you go about your lives.
Psalm 121
I will lift up my eyes to the hills, From whence shall my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to slip or to be moved; He Who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not smite you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life.
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
Another beautiful example of God watching us is in the Gospels when Jesus calls Nathanael to be one of His disciples.
John 1: 47- 49 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, He said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” “How do You know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the king of Israel.”
I saw you while you were under the tree. God sees you. Wherever you are. He sees you. Not only when you are kneeling down in prayer or lifting hands in worship, but God sees you when you sit under a tree, when you wipe a poopy butt, when you prepare food for your family, when you work hard to make sure everyone is taken care of. God sees you and knows you. Personally. He knows every intricate detail about you, down to the number of hairs on your head. And He thinks you are worth so so much!
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” Matthew 10:29–31
The God Who sees you is never un-aware of what you are going through. In Hebrew, El Roi means The God Who Sees Me.
Genesis 16 tells the story of the Angel of the Lord speaking to Hagar. The Angel of the Lord comforts her, instructs her and assures her. And in verse 13 she gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.
God sees you. And I pray that you too will see the God who sees you. See Him in His Word, the Bible, and see Him as He works mightily in your life and family. Like Elisha prayed for Gehazi, I pray that God will open your eyes and mine, to see that His Presence is ever with us, and that greater is He that is with us, than the evil that is in the world.
2 Kings 6:17 Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.
