Is there anything more precious than a Christmas tree with handmade ornaments on it? Well, we’re here to help you make that happen with these easy ornaments that all start with one basic pattern!
You’ll need:
- Felt (wool or craft felt)
- A needle and thread (or embroidery floss)
- Scissors
- Craft stuffing
- Ornament patterns – CLICK HERE!
Note: You can trace the pattern pieces onto thin carboard (think cereal boxes) and draw around them on felt, OR you can put double stick tape onto the back of the paper patterns and just cut the felt out without outlining.
SNOWMAN
Cut two pieces of the basic pattern in white felt. On one piece, embroider the nose, eyes, arms and buttons. I used French knots for the eyes, mouth and buttons, and a simple straight stitch for the nose and arms. Sew the two pieces together, right sides facing out, leaving space to stuff before you sew it completely shut. Once done, take a quick stitch in the top and tie a knot for hanging (do this for all of the ornaments).
SHEEP
Cut two basic patterns from white felt and one sheep head from gray. Cut two small circles from white felt and attach them to the head with French knots. Set the head aside and sew the body pieces together. Stuff and stitch shut. Attach the head to the body with craft or fabric glue. I added dots of glue and glitter to the body. Let dry.
PENGUIN
Cut two pieces of black felt for the body, two orange feet, one white tummy, an orange beak and two small white circles for eyes. I found it easier to include the wings into the body pattern, but you could cut them separately and sew them in as you stitch the body together. On the front, attach the eyes and beak with French knots. Whip stitch the tummy on. Pin or glue the feet in place. Sew the two body pieces together, making sure to catch the feet in at the same time. Leave space to stuff and finish sewing shut.
HOUSE
Cut two basic patterns out of whatever color you want your house to be. Cut a roof piece, windows and a door out of felt or fabric scraps. Cut a chimney piece (or two, if you want a stiffer chimney) out of felt. Decorate the front of your house (use the picture as a guide). Tuck the chimney in as you sew the sides together.
HOLY FAMILY
Cut two basic patterns out and one of each of the other pieces. Sew the front pieces together with simple stitches, using French knots for the eyes. Sew the two basic pieces together, stuffing before you sew them shut.
REINDEER
Cut two basic pattern pieces from tan felt. Cut one antler piece from darker brown felt. Cut a red or brown nose and a fabric scrap heart. Sew all pieces onto the front. Stitch the body together and stuff before closing.
TREE
This one is easy and fun. Simply cut two basic pieces out of green felt and decorate. You can embroider on the tree, sew on buttons, or use glitter glue, etc. Use the chimney pattern for a trunk or grab a stick from the yard and tuck that in instead with a bit of glue. (You could also use twigs for snowman arms and reindeer antlers!)
Most of all, have fun!
This is the wool felt display at my local craft shop:
The colors are amazing. Play around with your own color choices of felt and thread. Add glitter. Sew on buttons or trinkets. Skip the hanging thread on the tops and pile them in a basket instead. Make these your own!
Have fun and don’t forget to share pictures of your finished ornaments in the comment section. We’d love to see them!
