Fall is here and you know what that means … COMFORT FOOD!
In the past, comfort food equaled calorie-laden splurge food. But, now we have more options and the two don’t necessarily go hand-in-hand anymore.
I was originally attracted to this recipe because there was no added salt (you will not miss it!). I changed it around to fit my family’s tastes and dietary needs and it’s now one of our favorites. As an added bonus, most of the ingredients are ones you probably have in your pantry already.
Add some fresh cut veggies on the side and you’ve got fall comfort food at its finest.
Sloppy Joes
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 onion – diced
- 3 stalks diced celery
- 1 cup ketchup (try no salt or low sugar varieties!)
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 3 tablespoons vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
Brown the beef and turkey, onion and celery in a small amount of olive oil. Drain off any fat. Add the rest of the ingredients, bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes (alternatively, after browning, you can throw everything in a crockpot and let it simmer all day). Serve on toasted whole wheat hamburger buns.
What’s is your family’s favorite fall food?
