I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Boredom is not bad. It’s often a catalyst for creativity; when my kids say they’re bored I usually respond with something like, “I’m sure your brain will help you come up with something to do.” Boredom only becomes problematic when we (as parents) rush to solve it for our kids or allow them to default too quickly to easy boredom busters (like screens) that become habit-forming.
As parents, one of our jobs is to help our kids learn how to fill their time wisely. You can do that this summer with our printable that helps your child identify fifty (FIFTY!) alternatives to boredom. Have your child complete the printable, then the next time they complain that they’re bored refer them back to their list for ideas. This is a great tool for kids of ANY age – even (maybe especially) your older ones.
